Course Description: This course provides instruction in the fundamental skills of badminton. Students will learn all primary shots including serves, overhead shots, underhand shots, and drop shots. Skills, etiquette, court strategy, and rules will be applied through game play.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. define and identify the rules and strategy of badminton.
  2. demonstrate improvement in the fundamental techniques of badminton such as serve, overhead clear, drop, and smash shots.
  3. demonstrate proper sportsmanship through game etiquette.
  4. identify and analyze overall game play proficiency through peer observation.

Examples of Assignments

Reading Assignments

  1. Read about badminton basics on the USA Badminton website. Be prepared to share something interesting you learned.
  2. Research the history of badminton. Write a short essay about where badminton originated and when it came to the United States.

Writing Assignments

  1. Write a one-page summary of the official rules of badminton pertaining to the shuttle and the racquet.
  2. Research differences between European and American strategies of game play. Write a two-page essay outlining the differences.

Out-of-Class Assignments

  1. View any type of badminton competition to analyze strategies of game play which can include competitions and/or documentaries.
  2. Prepare a mock tournament outlining rules, brackets, and game personnel. Present a 5 minute presentation to the class.

The student will be required to provide:

a. Athletic apparel

b. Tennis or court shoes (non-marking sole shoes).

Other materials and/or equipment will be provided by the department.
