Course Description: This course is the first half of intermediate Japanese, which further develops language skills: reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking. Through written analysis and discussion of both modern and classical Japanese texts, students further increase their fluency and grammatical accuracy in the four skill areas. Students who have completed at least three, but fewer than four years of high school Japanese (or equivalent) with a letter grade of "A" or "B" within one year of the present date, should register for Fourth Semester Japanese.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. pronounce Japanese accurately, with clarity and rhythm
2. comprehend Japanese at the intermediate level
3. speak basic Japanese at the intermediate level
4. read Japanese with specific attention to 'hiragana', 'katakana', as well as 'kanji' compounds at the intermediate level
5. write Japanese with specific attention to 'hiragana', 'katagana', as well as 'kanji' compounds at the intermediate level
6. describe elements of Japanese culture

Reading Assignments

1. Read and be prepared to discuss the speech style differences between a polite conversation and a casual conversation.
2. Read about Japanese daily life and compare it to their life in the USA. Students also share examples from their life in class.

Writing Assignments

1. Write a two-page research paper on one aspect of traditional Japanese culture, such as Star Festival or New Year’s celebration.
2. Extract dialogues from a media content, such as Japanese anime or drama, and compare and analyze a casual speech style. Write a two-page paper explaining the results of your analysis.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Choose a Japanese media content such as Anime, drama, etc. Summarize the synopsis of the content and introduce it to the class.
2. Choose a Japanese topic and, after researching the topic (e.g., ‘Haiku’ poetry,) prepare a presentation and video clip to present in class. While presenting the researched information, include various key facts and examples to explain the topic.
