Course Description: This course requires higher skill level and/or leadership/management involvement than JOUR 10. Intermediate student media practicum that includes a lab that regularly produces a news or feature non-fiction product with a journalism emphasis by and for students and distributed to a campus or community audience. Must include weekly news assignments. May include a variety of student media across multiple platforms, including print, broadcast, and online. Includes practical experience in design/layout, visual, online, multimedia journalism, emerging technologies and leadership/management. Must be student produced with student leadership. (C-ID JOUR 131).

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Define relevant news content.
2. Gather news information weekly.
3. Edit basic and advanced news and information into publishable form, with attention to accuracy, clarity, thoroughness, fairness, AP style, and media law and ethics.
4. Assess legal issues affecting media.
5. Assess ethical issues affecting media.
6. Develop leadership and management skills as an editor.
7. Develop effective design/layout for story presentation.
8. Develop news and feature stories through written, visual, audio, video or other multimedia formats.
9. Determine the best format – print, multimedia, visual, etc. - for telling basic news stories.
10. Build a portfolio of completed projects for student media that demonstrates a range of storytelling formats/styles that are more advanced than in JOUR 10.

Reading Assignments

1. Read the "Photo Captions" section of the Associated Press Stylebook. Create a template for this semester's newspaper then mentor Journalism 10 students by copy-editing their submissions to the paper.
2. Read the editors' columns for the local daily and weekly newspapers. Compare and contrast styles, voices and general attitudes then present your findings to the class.

Writing Assignments

1. Go to the Chico Police Department website and click on the monthly arrest list. Take note of the most common crimes, where and when they take place, and who the arrested are. Compare these statistics to other cities of similar size and demographics. Write a 300-700 word publishable news story based on your information.
2. Using the question arc and ethical interview practices, interview a Butte College custodian, and take interview notes, including correct spelling of the preferred name and pronoun. Write a 400-750 word publishable story about a Butte College custodian. Custodians have a unique perspective on their employers.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Mentor a Journalism 10 student by modeling the process for pitching an ad to a local business, including teaching the classmate how to navigate the electronic payment form. Using digital tools, collaboratively create an ad for the business, including both black/white and color options. As a team, present your work to the class.
2. Contact an editor of at least two local papers and ask about the paper's policy for publishing corrections. Based on what you learned, lead the production team in the development of a correction policy for the college paper. Serve as the contact person for corrections over the course of the semester.
