Course Description: This course prepares students to meet the requirements to qualify and seek employment as a Type 2 Wildland Firefighter. It provides students with fundamental knowledge of wildland fire behavior, control, prevention and firefighter safety. Students will learn suppression and survival methods and techniques, and the use of hand and power tools and burning devices in the suppression of wildland fires. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be awarded certificates for the following National Wildland Fire Training courses: S-110 Basic Wildland Fire Orientation; S-130 Firefighter Training; S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior; L-180 Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service; I-100 Introduction to Incident Command System and NIMS 700 Introduction to National Incident Management System.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Describe principles of wildland fire control and the role of a firefighter under wildland fire control operations.
- Demonstrate fireline construction techniques.
- Analyze fire behavior, and develop and implement an incident action plan utilizing basic wildland firefighting strategies.
- Evaluate fireline conditions and select the appropriate extinguishing method available.
- Recognize unsafe working environments and establish methods to rectify them.
- Prepare a fire service employment application package, including a cover letter, an application and a resume.
- Describe the purpose of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS).
- Identify human performance issues in a high risk, dynamic work environment.

Writing Assignments
- Prepare an incident action plan for a fire emergency, and be prepared to present in class.
- Prepare a minimum one page employment application cover letter and instructor-provided sample applications for employment.
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Utilize various government websites to locate firefighter employment opportunities, and be prepared to discuss your results in class.
- Complete the online ICS 100 and NIMS 700 courses, print your certificates of completion and return them to class for credit.
