Course Description: This course will support English language learners as they acquire digital literacy practices to become users and creators of digital content. Students will use technology to engage in authentic English communication in a variety of personal, professional, and academic contexts. Students will engage in reading, writing, speaking, and listening strategies by exploring a variety of digital texts, genres, cultural artifacts, platforms, applications, and programs. Unlimited repeats. Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory only.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Demonstrate responsible digital citizenship including creating new online accounts, managing and resetting passwords, maintaining personal cyber safety and security, and accessing technical support.
2. Navigate digital platforms to access authentic texts and multimedia, to facilitate English-language learning, and to gain academic and career skills.
3. Compose and format multimodal projects including digital documents, presentations, videos, and visual aids while practicing citing sources and acknowledging intellectual property rights.
4. Identify the basic elements of multimodal or digital texts such as purpose and audience.
5. Apply growing awareness of digital conventions, etiquette, and cultural norms by creating formal and informal technology-mediated messages.
6. Access campus digital resources such as the Butte College website, email, portal, and learning management systems to facilitate campus engagement and academic planning.
7. Demonstrate progress in keyboarding and mousing skills.
8. Evaluate the accuracy of and ethical implications of using translation tools, editing software, and AI for assistance in language-related tasks.

Reading Assignments

1. Watch and read subtitles of a TED Talk related to a problem or area of interest. Watch the talk several times and take notes. Discuss new vocabulary with classmates. Make one page sketch notes identifying main ideas in the talk and share orally with the class.
2. Read a variety of cultural narratives online and watch StoryCorps animated videos with subtitles on. Interview several classmates and create an animated digital story based on your own in-class ethnographic research.

Writing Assignments

1. Working in a group, write and film a video summarizing a text you have read, making sure to properly cite sources.
2. Research a campus or community resource online. Write a 250-word email to a friend describing the services offered by the organization. Assess the value of the resource and make recommendations of whether or not your friend should use the service.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Identify a skill or process in which you are an expert. Search for “how to” videos on YouTube about your area of expertise, for example, “how to crochet.” Keeping in mind audience and purpose, create your own “how to" video and upload it to YouTube.
2. Using the campus Learning Management System, participate in an online discussion using digital etiquette norms. Later, send a formal email to your instructor summarizing your discussing and adding your final conclusions.
