Course Description: This course assists an English language learner in developing communication for life, career, and college. Through the integration of reading, writing, speaking and listening activities in English, this course prepares the student to communicate academically and introduces intermediate-to-advanced level grammar structures in context. Unlimited repeats. Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory only. Open Entry/Open Exit.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. identify and analyze sentence and text structures of English reading selections
2. compose a variety of grammatically correct sentence structures, demonstrating an expanded command of standard written English
3. use increasingly complex grammar structures such as modals, advanced verb tenses, irregular verbs, and clauses
4. demonstrate cross-cultural awareness and analysis
5. demonstrate comprehension of a variety of workplace and academic reading and listening texts
6. adapt language and vocabulary choices to purpose, task, and audience in various life, college, and career contexts
7. apply effective life, academic, and workplace communication skills
8. illustrate advancing pronunciation skills
9. produce multi-paragraph texts with claims and evidentiary support
10. apply digital literacy skills to work and academic settings

7. For a "Satisfactory" grade, students must complete the course with an accrued average of 70% or higher from the above items.

Reading Assignments

1. Read an article from a local or national newspaper and underline new vocabulary words. Use strategies (context clues, word parts, parts of speech) to infer meanings of new vocabulary. Verify in a dictionary and use new vocabulary in speaking and writing.
2. Read a part of a textbook chapter. Take notes at home and summarize it orally for your group in class. Groups will then present information from their portions of the text to the whole class.

Writing Assignments

1. Watch a news video about the changing American workplace. Brainstorm your own workplace skills and write a 1-2 page cover letter describing your own professional strengths.
2. Read an article or chapter about American cultural values. Write a 1-2 page essay about an important value or belief in your culture. Add support and specific examples.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Create a survey about workplace culture using polite questions. Outside class, survey native English speakers using your questions, record answers, and share your results in class.
2. Find and read an article about a current local event. Go to the event and prepare a short speech using irregular past verbs to describe your cultural observations of the event. Contrast it with a cultural event in your country.
