Course Description: This course provides a conversational approach to the learning of elementary English. It offers the English language learner practice in verbal communication with special emphasis on literacy and life skills. The introduction to basic literacy skills reinforces spoken and written English. Unlimited repeats. Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory only. Open Entry/Open Exit.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. operate effectively in a language-learning classroom environment
2. use beginning literacy skills inside and outside the classroom
3. demonstrate guided listening and speaking skills
4. use appropriate language responses in every-day social contexts
5. recognize various cultural practices
6. communicate effectively in real-life situations
7. demonstrate progress in digital literacy skills

9. apply foundational pronunciation techniques

Reading Assignments

1. Read the short story "Winning the Lottery," highlight new vocabulary, and copy definitions. Answer questions to show comprehension.
2. Read the paragraph "American Activities Done during Free Time." Listen to pronunciation models and practice sounds in small groups. Discuss free time activities in your culture with classmates.

Writing Assignments

1. In a 1-page document, answer questions about yourself by filling in then copying complete sentences based on models and share your results with a classmate.
2. Interview a classmate from a list of model questions and write down their responses in a 1-2 page document. When finished, check for similarities in classmates' answers.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. After reading a short story and answering comprehension questions in class, take the story home to copy it in your own handwriting to practice writing, spelling, and vocabulary. Be ready to read it to a partner in class.
2. Using simple jumbled sentences, put the words in the correct order to form a complete sentence with correct capitals and punctuation. Be prepared to share your work with a partner in class.
