Course Description: This course is a study of the principles utilized in planning and designing residential, commercial, and public landscaped areas. Topics include the fundamentals of design, the design process, and client relations. Emphasis will be placed upon the selection and utilization of plants and non-plant materials included in landscape areas.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Meet with clients and present themselves in a professional manner.
2. Identify the proper use of plant and non-plant materials in landscape design.
3. Complete the design process professionally to ensure a satisfied client.
4. Use various tools and techniques to communicate abstract design concepts.
5. Identify the tools and strategies for professional client relationships.
6. Identify the value of the design process and business opportunities available to professional landscape designers.

Reading Assignments

1. Read the chapter in the text on residential landscape architecture on site check preparation and client information gathering for class discussion.
2. Read the chapter in your text on proper scale choice for design process and planning. Be prepared to discuss in class.

Writing Assignments

1. In a 1-2 page description of the process of asking the necessary questions during an initial interview of a new client for landscape design. Be prepared to present to the class.
2. Create and maintain a logbook record of all hours spent on each class project. This record will assist you in deciding how much to charge for these services in the future. Be prepared to submit your logbook to the instructor.

Out-of-Class Assignments

1. Complete an off-campus site check and client information gathering for a class project. Report your findings to the class.
2. Make arrangements to visit a landscape design professional and interview them about this career. Present your findings to the class.

Other Learning Materials

Students will be required to supply various materials used in landscape design. These include templates, expandable compass, drafting pencils, Engineer’s & Architect’s scales, erasers, drafting tape, drafting brush, and kit bag to carry it all. The department will furnish practicing and drafting paper and printing services.
