Course Description: This course provides a general introduction to art that offers a look at works of art through the study of theory, terminology, themes, design principles, media, techniques, with an introduction to the visual arts across time and diverse cultures. (C-ID ARTH 100).
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Evaluate and critique works of art and architecture based on formal elements and principles of design and employing appropriate art historical terminology
- Analyze, evaluate, and distinguish materials and techniques used for creating art and architecture
- Differentiate art historical methodologies
- Identify, analyze, and discuss the functions of art and architecture and the roles of artists in diverse cultures

Reading Assignments
- Read the section in "Artforms" on Prehistoric Art, and come to class prepared to discuss the various theories about the possible functions of Upper-Paleolithic figurines and cave paintings.
- Read the section in "Living With Art" on Greek "lost-wax" Bronze Casting technique, and come to class prepared to discuss the technical steps required to complete a sculpture in this medium.
Writing Assignments
- Visit the current exhibition in the Butte College Art Gallery. Select a work of art you find compelling. Sketch and take notes while experiencing a painting. Write a 5-page paper that includes a detailed description and an interpretation of the work. Attach your sketch to the paper.
- Discuss the “power of the still image” as it pertains to American photography in the 20th century. Give examples of two photographs in a 1-2 page document and discuss the changes in society that were brought about as a result of the photographs. Be prepared to discuss your ideas with the class.
Out-of-Class Assignments
- Explore the websites: Google Art Project, or Web Gallery of Art. Find an artwork of interest to you. Write a short paper in which you describe and interpret the visual language of the selected artwork.
- Visit several local art galleries. From these exhibitions, pick two paintings or sculptures to compare, and write a 1-2 page qualitative analysis of their form and content.
