Excerpts From the Textbook - Comprehensive Glossary - Map of Eastern Religions
On this page you'll find an excerpt from the text, a searchable glossary in PDF format, and a map of the spread of Eastern religions which opens in your browser.
Haven't purchased the textbook yet?
Our textbook, Eastern Ways of Being Religious, edited by Gary Kessler, is vital to this course, and you must obtain a copy if you're to be successful. Copies are on reserve in the main campus library and at the Chico Center.
If you're waiting for financial aid, or the bookstore has run out, here are the first two assigned readings from the textbook (in PDF format) for LM02 and LM04. The text is searchable.
Be sure to refer to the syllabus/complete course calendar for details on due dates (click on the Syllabus button to open the syllabus and complete course calendar, also in PDF format). A couple of notes:
- "EWBR" in the complete course calendar refers to "Eastern Ways of Being Religious"
- Page numbers in the complete course calendar refer to the original page numbers of the printed text (not to the page numbers you might see in the menu bar of your Adobe Reader or "added" page numbers in the custom printed and digital version of the text, both of which are available for purchase at the bookstore). I'll try to make it clear what passage in the text I'm referring to, but watch carefully that you have the correct page numbers!
Most computers have the Adobe Reader PDF software already installed, but if you need the latest version to download and install, click on the button below and follow the download and installation instructions.
Need a glossary of unfamiliar terms?
As you'll see in the course, many of the quiz questions deal with vocabulary. Though a number of Presentation pages in the Learning Modules yet to come contain popup definitions of unfamiliar words, you can also download a searchable comprehensive glossary (in PDF format) that I hope will be helpful throughout the semester.
Where in the world?
By clicking on the map of Eastern religions, you can see some of the important areas of influence of a variety of Eastern traditions.
What should I do next?
Well, thanks for reading! Next, after you've clicked on the Syllabus menu button on the left and have read the syllabus/course calendar carefully, and have printed out the complete file, click on the first Learning Module (LM01) to see your assignments. Enjoy!
