Our rich athletic tradition at Butte College is strongly supported by the basketball program's success.  Outstanding coaches and players have contributed to this rich heritage.
Bob Lincoln (1970), Tom Powers (1982), and Jerry Cleek (1993), each led their teams to Golden Valley Conference crowns.  However, our overall success is due in no small way to John Abell's tenure as the "Wizard of Roadrunner Country".  As Butte College's head coach for 17 years he amassed an amazing record and accomplishments.  Overall his Butte teams won 329 games and lost only 87!  His teams won 14 conference crowns with an astounding 235-38 league record.  In 1975 and 1976 the Roadrunners were California State Champions.  Capping off his illustrious career, Coach Abell, was inducted into the California Community College Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997.
Our present program has much to aspire to with this outstanding basketball legacy.
