History: In the past, GM technicians attended vocational schools, graduated and went to work for GM dealerships and then received factory training at the various training centers throughout the country.Present: Now, you can receive GM Factory Training at the Butte College Automotive Technology Program as you complete it. Butte College Automotive Department has teamed with General Motors Corporation to provide students with GM certified technician training in conjunction with our regular automotive training program. GM has provided us with a fleet of new and late model vehicles plus a Computer Based Training Course, manuals and special tools to work with. Butte's auto instructors have completed GM training programs.HOW CAN A PERSON GET STARTED?Just enroll in the Auto Tech Program at Butte College and declare yourself as a GM student. It will take you about four semesters to complete the program (sixteen months) at a total cost for books and tuition of about $1,600. If you need housing while attending school, Craig Hall in Chico has room and board facilities starting at about $600/month. Other options are available.WHAT ABOUT TOOLS?All GM ASEP students are required to purchase a basic set of hand tools during the first year of the program.WHAT IS THE BREAKDOWN OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM?While completing Butte College's AA/AS Automotive Degree program, you will receive General Motors certified training in the following ASE specific areas:A1 Engine RepairA2 Automatic TransmissionsA3 Manual Drive TrainA4 Suspension and SteeringA5 BrakesA6 Electrical SystemsA7 Heating and Air ConditioningA8 Engine PerformanceThree training methods will be used:Computer Based Training (CBT) using GM CDroms in our on site computer labs. Students will complete self paced training programs.Interactive Distant Learning (IDL) by viewing prerecorded video programs of GM IDL broadcasts.Hands On Training - Students complete specified lab tasks on late model GM vehicles. Students will also learn to use GM special tools, procedures and the new S2000 computer information system.HOW WILL I FIND A POSITION WITH A GENERAL MOTORS DEALERSHIP?Your Butte College General Motors ASEP coordinator will work with you to identify a GM sponsoring dealership.Butte College's Automotive program maintains a website where your training record and achievements will be posted. GM dealerships throughout the United States will be given an access code, which allows them to review your training record. They will be able to see which part of the country you would like to live and work in, and will be able to contact you by phone or mail.WHAT ABOUT WORK EXPERIENCE?While enrolled in the GM ASEP program you will be required to complete a minimum of 1600 hours of work experience at your sponsoring GM dealership.HOW CAN I SIGN UP FOR THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY?Just call the Butte College Department of Automotive Technology at 530-879-6103.
