Inspiring Scholars Open House October 20

Inspiring Scholars Open House October 20

Inspiring Scholars is a program for current and former foster youth who attend, or have the goal of attending, Butte College. An open house celebrating a new location will take place at the Inspiring Scholars offices on October 20, from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Butte College main campus, 3536 Butte Campus Drive, in the Media Center, Room 121, located directly behind the library. The public is invited to meet current and former foster youth, staff, and learn about the resources the program offers.

“The goal of Inspiring Scholars is to help current and former foster youth get into college, stay in college, and reach their academic goals whether it’s an associate’s degree, vocational certificate, or transfer to another college or university,” said Vance Edwards, Butte College Program Coordinator. “Our 350 current and former foster youth attending Butte College truly benefit from dedicated academic counseling, a computer lab, drop-in appointments, help with financial aid, community with other foster youth, mentoring, and more.”

According to Edwards, entering foster care often means changing homes and schools. Youth are routinely out of school for weeks at a time when they change schools, sometimes their credits are not transferred to the new school, and starting a new school is a major adjustment- socially and academically. While in foster care, about seventy percent of youth have three or more placements. These disruptions in education correlate with poor educational outcomes. In Butte County, foster youth are the lowest performing students, even when compared to other low-socioeconomic status students, English language learners, and students with disabilities. Sadly, less than half (45 percent) of foster youth graduate high school.

Edwards noted that research shows foster youth who participate in campus foster youth support programs are more likely to stay in school and obtain a degree.

The Inspiring Scholars Program Offers:

  • A study lounge designated only for foster youth (MC 121)
  • Drop-in appointments to talk about any problems affecting your schooling
  • Student leadership opportunities
  • Community with other foster youth through a student group
  • Help with college entrance forms such as Admissions, Financial Aid, and Scholarship Applications
  • Campus events especially for foster youth
  • Help with transferring from Butte College to a four-year university (like Chico State)
  • Help with using campus and community resources: housing, wellness center, tutoring, childcare, food pantry, student health center, transportation, etc.
  • If you qualify, support from the John Burton Fund for text books and/or other academic assistance.
  • And free snacks!

Inspiring Scholars is available to all youth who spent time in foster care or are still in foster care.
