Do you love to rock out? Then come audition for Butte College's fall musical, "Spring Awakening." Auditions will be held Tuesday, August 23, and Tuesday, August 24, 6 – 9 p.m. at the Butte College main campus, 3536 Butte Campus Drive, ARTS Building, Black Box Theatre.
Butte College is seeking a diverse cast of mostly younger performers (late teens–early 20s), with at least two roles for more mature actors (30s or older). As part of the audition, you will be asked to perform a Broadway rock or pop song. If you don't have a song, the production team will teach you one. Bring your dance clothes so that you can learn some rockin' choreography. You'll also be asked to read from the script. The show contains mature themes.
"Spring Awakening" debuted on Broadway in December of 2006, playing until January 2009, and was recently revived on Broadway by Deaf West Theatre in 2015. The musical is based on the banned German play of the same title, written in 1891 by Frank Wedekind. From the publishers, Music Theatre International: "The winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, told by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater through what Entertainment Weekly called, 'the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade,' Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. The landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock and roll that is exhilarating audiences across the nation like no other musical in years."
Rehearsals will start August 25 and a rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions. Fall performances take place November 16–20. Cast members must register for Butte College Drama classes associated with the production. Musical direction will be provided by Tamara Allspaugh and the choreographer will be Melinda Buzan. The new Theatre Director is Jesse Merz who is also a Theatre Arts instructor.
"We are thrilled to have a new Theatre Director. Jesse earned a Master’s Degree in Dramatic Arts from the University of California, Davis and a Master of Arts in Teaching from George Fox University.
