Oroville, CA – The Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office awarded three system-wide technology grants to the CCC Technology Center at Butte College. The grants include the following:
• Online Education Initiative (Awarded to Foothill-De Anza Community College District, in partnership with Butte): Development of a statewide online education management system and course exchange. Funded at $26.9 million for 19 months, with potential extended funding of $10 million per year for three subsequent years.
• Common Assessment Initiative: Development of a statewide common assessment testing and placement system. Funded at $16 million for 19 months, with potential extended funding of $8 million per year for three subsequent years.
• Education Planning Initiative: A new statewide electronic education planner will be created. Funded at $12 million for 19 months, with potential extended funding at $6 million per year for three subsequent years.
"The grants will each play a vital role in improving student success and completion for all California Community College students," said Dr. Kimberly Perry, Butte College President.
"The grants have separate goals: to place students more effectively in English and math, make it easier for students to develop educational plans to stay on track, and improve access to impacted courses needed for transfer to CSU. Our Butte College team is honored to be selected for funding to implement creative solutions among the state's community college system," said Tim Calhoon, Director of the California Community Colleges Technology Center at Butte College.
The three initiatives are expected to expand and integrate the existing CCC technology projects as administered by the California Community College Chancellor's Office, Technology, Research, and Information Systems Division. Each has a specific focus on developing free and low-cost tools and services that support degree attainment and goal completion for 2.3 million CCC students at 112 colleges.
Since 1997, the CCC Technology Center team at Butte College has led statewide technology projects for the CCC Chancellor's Office, including providing Internet access for the entire CCC system, including development of CCCApply (www.cccapply.org), an online application for admission used by 95 percent of all California Community Colleges; eTranscript California, the electronic transcript exchange for over 80 California institutions of higher education; and the California Virtual Campus (www.cvc.edu), which is a catalog of more than 19,000 courses and 1,300 degrees offered online by accredited institutions in California.
