Butte College is hosting two English as a Second Language (ESL) Prep Nights in January for students who intend to enroll in Spring 2014 ESL classes. The first Prep Night orientation will be held one week prior to the start of the spring semester on Tuesday, January 21 at the Chico Center, 2320 Forest Avenue, Room 231, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The second Prep Night orientation will be offered during the first week of spring semester classes on Thursday, January 30 at the Chico Center, Room 231, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. At these drop-in orientations, students will be able to tour the Chico Center facility, and register for their classes after assessing which ones are appropriate for them. Non-credit ESL classes are free.
The ESL Life Skills class (ESL 310) is an "open entry/open exit" class, giving students the opportunity to join, or leave, the class any time during the semester. The ESL program also offers a "Conversation Café," a free, one- hour informal session during which students may practice their English conversational skills in a fun and relaxed environment.
Students enrolled in the program may also earn a non-credit certificate of competency in ESL. This sequence of non-credit ESL courses takes students from survival skills to high intermediate language proficiency in preparation for their transition into credit-bearing ESL courses. Students will receive the foundational language proficiency necessary for various career pathways and general education courses. The certificate program can be completed in two academic semesters, and concludes with a certificate awards celebration each May. For more information contact 530-895-2333 or visit the ESL office at the main campus, Learning Resource Center building, Room 344.
