The Butte College Speech and Debate Team has earned Third Place honors recently at the 2012 Golden Gate Regional Parliamentary Debate held at San Francisco State University facing 25 college teams. Individual team members also made a great showing against 281 competitors.
Students Tyler Solorio took First Place in Novice Parliamentary Speaker against 63 other competitors while Jessica Harrington won two First Place awards in Novice Programmed Oral.
“Jessica earned the coveted ‘picket fences’ meaning she earned First Place in each of her rounds and all judges in the final round also awarded her First Place. This is a big honor and rarely happens,” said Stacey Bartlett, Faculty/Chair Communication Studies.
Student Niko Neubauer won Third Place in Open Impromptu Speaking and picked up an AFA Nationals “leg.”
“In order to qualify for the national tournament ‘legs’ must be won at sanctioned tournaments and Niko is on his way to gaining the ‘leg up’ on the competition,” said Bartlett.
Following this great success, Butte’s team went on a Second Place Sweepstakes finish at the Santa Rosa Junior College Tournament as well as a Third Place Sweepstakes for Individual Events, placing them ahead of the University of California, Berkeley team.
Once again, Harrington and Neubauer gave stellar performances. Harrington earned a First Place in the Open POI. Neubauer earned First Place in Open Extemp, the highest level of individual competition.
Bartlett credits the team’s early success to the students’ dedication and to the work of Stephen Ban, team director; coaches, Ryan Guy and Kiara Koenig; Chico State student intern coaches, Kelsey Caldwell and Scott Laczko; and volunteer coach, Theresa Perry.
