High school students from around the county will put their science skills to the test as they compete in the 10th Annual Butte College Chemistry Day competition on April 26, 2013.
Four schools including Biggs High School, Gridley High School, Chico High School and the School of Arts and Sciences are signed up for this day of fun and competition.
Each participating high school may send as many as three teams of four students each to compete in four events. The competition will test the high school students’ overall chemistry knowledge in the “Chem Bowl.” Knowledge will be tested in “the Wheel of Nomenclature” as students will be asked to name chemical compounds while students will also need to demonstrate their chemistry prowess during two laboratory experiments. Completing a chemistry crossword puzzle will be their final test.
In addition to going head-to-head in this academic competition, the students will also have the opportunity to witness physics, geology, weather, and astronomy demonstrations and enjoy lunch.
More than 35 Butte College students have volunteered to assist in the Chemistry Day competition serving as experiment monitors, event managers, and results coordinators.
The day will end with an awards ceremony during which the top three teams in each event will be presented with certificates and the overall winning school will receive a trophy.
