The Butte College Theater Department is holding auditions for its fall production of the Broadway rock opera Rent, which will open in the college's new state-of-the-art theater in November. Open casting calls for Rent are slated for May 11 & 12, from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the band room at Pleasant Valley High School, 1475 East Avenue, in Chico.
All performers will be asked to sing 20 bars of music, not from Rent. Sheet music is preferred. Rehearsals begin August 24 and performance dates are November 6-15.
Barry Piccinino, veteran drama professor and director, has been "doing his homework" on Rent for several months listening to the score; reading the script , background material and a slew of reviews and production notes preparing for what he says will be an outstanding production.
The decision to produce Rent, the seventh longest running Broadway musical, came following the college's hugely successful production of Chicago last fall which played to sold out houses at the Paradise Performing Arts Center.
"When we began designing this theater five years ago, we based it on the theater in Ashland, OR. It's a beautiful facility that will seat up to 300 people with a shop, dressing room, make-up room and state of the art sound and lighting systems. As far as I'm aware, we are the only ones in the North State with the rights to Rent and to be able to produce this musical for the opening of our new theater is very, very exciting," said Piccinino. "This is going to be a challenge for every one involved but we love a challenge and are putting 110 percent into it."
