CHICO, CA: A Butte College student has a creative way to pay for his college tuition. His "can do" attitude pushed him to collect cans to pay his way to college.
Kevin Perez was recently forced to cut back on his hours at his job as a maintenance worker at a Chico hotel. "I do the garbage at the hotel, I noticed a lot of people throw a lot of things away and I saw it and it started to add up to a lot and I thought if I turned it in, I'll see what I can get for it. And I actually got more than I thought."
Perez started going around to local businesses and the pile of cans kept growing, which is now paying his way through this semester at Butte College.
"So far I've raised enough to pay for my tuition this semester and buy my books. I'm pretty much going to school for free."
We should mention, it is illegal to take recyclables from trash cans or bins without the business or property owner's permission.
