The Butte County branches of the American Association of University Women, in partnership with Butte College, will be sponsoring Career Trek, a one-day program for eighth grade girls on Saturday, January 10, 2009. All eighth grade girls in Butte County are invited to attend, and parents are encouraged to join them in learning about Butte College and especially about the career possibilities in fields requiring a background in math and science.
Fifteen young women who are working in some of these fields have agreed to meet with the girls in small groups and discuss with them the enjoyment they have found in their working lives. Women who will be presenting include a dermatologist, a naturalist, a veterinarian, and accountant, an agricultural researcher, and emergency room nurse, a criminalist and many others. Hands-on activities are planned which will be interesting to the girls involved. It is hoped that the girls will be encouraged to see some of the career opportunities available and to consider taking the high school courses that will be necessary in order to pursue them.
Each girl will have a chance to attend three classes in the fields in which they are most interested. Following the morning classes a lunch will be served and they will be given a tour of the Butte College campus. A speaker from the college will be available to explain scholarships and other forms of financial aid. There will be a minimal charge of $5 to cover the lunch.
Any eighth grade girl and her parents/guardians are welcome to attend. For more information or to receive an application, call 846-2030, 846-3976 or 846-2405 (for Spanish speaking parents). The deadline for applications is December 18.
