Butte College's California Community College Transfer Counselor Website Project has been selected by the Technology, Research and Information Systems Division of the California Community Colleges (CCC) System Office and the Foundation for the California Community Colleges as a recipient of the 2008 Technology Focus Award.
The prestigious Technology Focus Award recognizes college, district, regional, system or statewide projects that have identified and solved significant problems to the benefit of student, staff, and/or faculty.
"It's an honor for a Student Services Program to receive a technology award," said Ray Rodriguez, Transfer Counseling Center Coordinator and CCC Statewide Transfer Counselor Website project director.
In June 2007, the Butte College Transfer Counseling Center received a two-year California Community College Chancellor's Office grant to develop a website. The goal of the site was to become a one-stop website for California's community college transfer counselors. The website contains links and access to information for all public and private California colleges and universities. Information provided on the website is needed by counselors to assist students in becoming both transfer eligible and a priority for admission to a four-year institution. Both California State University and University of California institutions have also selected the website as the designated server for announcements affecting transfers. Approximately 1,000 counselors across California are signed up on the listserv to receive campus announcements. The site has become so successful that the California Community College Chancellor's Office has reissued a call for proposal for a new five year grant to continue the project, according to Rodriguez.
"The Website is a valuable resource tool used by all counselors to assist students in transferring to a four-year school of their choice. It is a one-stop repository of transfer specific information; a strong communication tool with a list-serve tool for training counselors; and, it has created inter-segmental partnership that targets transfer students," said Rodriguez.
Since the site serves as a repository of university information that a counselor needs to assist transfer students, it saves the counselors' time. "Prior to this site, counselors had to access multiple websites to get the information needed. This site saves the counselor web search time allowing more time to be spent with the student," said Ruth De Tro, Program Administrator for the Transfer Counseling Center and CCC Statewide Transfer Counselor Website's Webmaster.
Focus Awards are selected based on scope and complexity of the endeavor, technological innovation, benefit to the institution and key constituents, and demonstration of excellence and professionalism.
