With Saturday's Northern California championship game on the horizon, the Butte College football team will head down to Fresno County for the title matchup against Reedley this week as the third-ranked team in the JCGridwire.com national poll.
The Roadrunners, who finished 10-0 in the regular season for just the second time in school history after Saturday's 33-7 win over No. 22 Foothill last week, had been fourth before this week's poll was released late Monday. Reedley (7-3) is ranked No. 15.
The two teams faced four common opponents during the season - San Joaquin Delta, Foothill, Diablo Valley and Santa Rosa.
While Butte went unbeaten against the group, Reedley finished 1-3. The Tigers lost to Santa Rosa 38-20 in week one, Foothill 16-10 in week three and San Joaquin Delta 27-17 in week eight while defeating Diablo Valley 56-13 in week five. Butte defeated the four common opponents 143-80 while Reedley outscored the four opponents 103-94 in large part due to the blowout win over Diablo Valley.
Reedley picked up the home matchup as the host of the State Center Bowl game; Butte hasn't been registered as the host of a postseason game since the Holiday Bank Bowl disbanded after 2006.
The winner Saturday's game moves on to prepare for the state title game at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa on Dec. 13 due to differences in playoff structure in the north and south.
The two 10-0 teams above Butte in the rankings are No. 1 College of the Canyons, which is in the Southern California playoffs, and Snow College in Utah.
