Changes in the Library

New APA & MLA citation guidelines

The American Psychological Association and the Modern Language Association have released new editions of their citation and style guides.

Please visit The OWL at Purdue for the most recent tips on using the new APA & MLA style guidelines. You can also visit the Center for Academic Success (2nd Floor of the Learning Resource Center on Main Campus) for help with citations, term papers, and more.

The new Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th Edition, Second printing as well as the new MLA Style Guide, 7th edition are now available at the library.

Many of these changes reflect the move toward digital and online resources.

IMPORTANT: The first printing of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th Edition, contained many errors, which were only corrected in the second printing. Check the copyright page, opposite the Table of Contents. If it is a second printing, the second paragraph will read "Second printing:October 2009" (or later).

A few key changes in the MLA Style Guide, 7th ed. include:

  • No more underlining
  • No more URLs -- MLA no longer requires URLs, but encourages writers to provide a URL if the citation information does not easily lead readers to the source
  • Publication medium -- for all documents accessed from anyInternet resource, including subscription databases and the World Wide Web, the citation will always include the medium "Web."
  • Databases -- In addition to using the medium "Web," MLA has eliminated the requirement to include the name of the service (EBSCOHost, Proquest, Gale) and the name of the subscribing institution
  • New abbreviations -- when certain data is missing, such as publisher or page numbers, there are suggested abbreviations to display denoting that fact
  • Continuous pagination --both volume and issue numbers are required, regardless of pagination

Library hours

Current Main Campus and Chico Center Library hours can be found here here.

Media Services for Distance Learning

The Media Services for Distance Learning department has been reorganized.

Videos for class and in-library use are now available at the Chico Center Library.
Reserve videos will be available at the Main Campus Library.
