Important Information For Online Students


1. How to start your course

  1. Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
  2. Log in to MyBC (http://mybc.butte.edu)
  3. Click the "Bb" button to get access to your courses.

If you don't log in within the first 24 hours, you may be DROPPED from the course.

Your Blackboard access and materials won't be available until the first day of class.


2. Get your computer ready.

View the Announcements for Blackboard and look for the Student Support  link for help with common issues with web browsers, such as configuring pop-up blockers. This is also within every Blackboard course in the Course Menu on the left side of the page.

Streaming Video and Other Multimedia

Be aware that your course may require the use of web browser "plug-ins" (i.e. Adobe Flash, Acrobat, etc.) to access multimedia content. Most browsers will alert you if a plug-in is needed. Your instructor should post information to assist you with any special requirements.

3. Get yourself ready

Taking an online course generally requires more discipline and focus than a face-to-face class. Successful online students set aside specific times each week to work on courses.

Most online courses involve a lot of writing (even class discussions must be typed!). There is a lot of reading, too, including textbook materials, online content, and instructions. If you're a "detail person" you probably will flourish in an online environment. If you find you need a lot of human contact, you might find online courses to be especially challenging.

Students may think that online courses "go at your own pace." However, almost all online courses offered at Butte College require students to follow a schedule from week to week. Within that time frame, students can work any time of the day or night.

What if I can't log in on the first day of class?

I've just added the course but I either can't log in to MyBC or my class is not showing up. What should I do?

If you're having trouble logging in on the first day of class (remember that your course is not available until the first day) please contact Student Technical Support at 530-895-2925 or StudentTechSupport@butte.edu

If you added after the course has begun, it will take up to 12 hours to sync your schedule with access to the corresponding Blackboard course. Until that time you won't be able to access course materials. If your MyBC account shows you have successfully added the course, and 12 hours has passed and you're still not able to access your class through MyBC, please contact Student Technical Support.

 

Where do I find the class syllabus?

The class syllabus should be available within your course in Blackboard. Look for the Syllabus link in the Course Menu, or on the Home Page within your Blackboard course(s).

 

Do I need to log in at a specific time to view my course?

You should access Blackboard after 8 AM Pacific Time on the first day of class to read the syllabus and become familiar with due dates and course requirements. There is no need to log in at an exact time since course materials are available throughout the week. Your instructor will inform you within the course if there are exceptions.

 

I have a specific question about the course and have contacted instructor but I haven't heard back. What should I do

Sometimes online instructors do not begin interacting with students until the first day of class, so you may not get a response to a phone message or email. In that case please contact the appropriate academic department for assistance.

 

How do I get the textbooks for the course?

Textbooks are available by course and control number from the bookstore on the main campus or at the Chico Center. You may also order books online at http://buttecollegebookstore.com. Make sure you have the correct control number for your course since an online section may use a different textbook than a face-to-face section of the same course. In some cases digital versions of the textbook are available.
