Center for Academic Success

Welcome to CAS!

Don't let the semester go by without attending one of our
free, drop-in workshops!

There's no need to pre-register. Just check the schedules for a workshop you'd like to attend and come join us. You'll find many great topics. Check here for more information.

"The workshops have been my favorite resource so far. No matter the subject matter, I always leave with some new knowledge about myself or new strategies to try. I love that." - Krista Titensor, Butte College student

CAS Big Room with StudentsThe Center for Academic Success (CAS) provides many resources in support of academic success for all Butte College students. We focus on helping students gain strategies and skills they can apply in a variety of settings and in a variety of ways across the curriculum.

Services are free for all currently enrolled Butte College students. Students are always asked to check in when accessing any CAS services.

To use the services in CAS, please enroll each semester in EDUC 310, a free, non-graded, no-credit course. This only takes a minute or two and is necessary for continuing CAS funding. For more information or to get assistance with enrolling, please visit the front desk of CAS in the LRC on main campus or in CHC 230 at the Chico Center.

The Center for Academic Success is located on the main floor of the Learning Resource Center on main campus. CAS is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

CAS at the Chico Center is located in CHC 230. The hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Monday evenings, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Chico Center CAS offers tutoring in several subjects. Tutoring schedules are posted in CHC 230 and are also available by phone at 530-893-7720.

Free Drop-in Tutoring is available in many subjects at both the main campus and at the Chico Center. No appointment is necessary. For more information on tutoring and schedules, please go to CAS Tutoring.

Tutor-Supported Drop-in Computer Labs, located on main campus in LRC 224 (inside CAS) and LRC 143, and at the Chico Center in CHC 231, offer computers for student academic use. See CAS Rooms and Labs for further details about the labs.

CAS Critical Skills Workshops are free, drop-in workshops that cover a wide variety of topics that support student success. All current workshop schedules are available online after the second week of the semester by selecting the CAS Workshops link. Schedules are also available as handouts at the CAS front desk and at the Chico Center CAS (CHC 230). For more information on the Critical Skills Study Hour ½-unit course, please go to Critical Skills 1/2-unit Course.

Group Study Rooms inside CAS are available for student use. Rooms can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. See CAS Rooms and Labs for further details.

The Student Athlete Success Program is supervised by Coach Jon Hays during scheduled hours inside CAS for students pursuing academic as well as athletic goals. CAS takes pride in this highly effective program. Contact Jon Hays at 530-879-6142 or haysjo@butte.edu for more information.

The International Student Success Program is up and running. Learning Resource Specialist Julia Coolidge is working with first-semester as well as returning international students by providing drop-in study hours on Mondays from 5-7:50 p.m. at the Chico Center CAS, in CHC 230, and Wednesdays from 9-9:50 a.m. in LRC 223 inside CAS, in addition to offering other services. All international students are encouraged to attend these study sessions and/or stop by to meet Julia.

CAS TIP Sheets are online resources that offer specific information on more than 85 topics, including writing skills, such as rules of grammar and punctuation, and reading, study, and critical thinking skills. See CAS TIP Sheets to access all topics.

Individual Study Guide Sessions are available by appointment with CAS faculty. Specific study strategies and available resources can be explored with students in individual or group sessions. Call CAS at 530-895-2386 (main campus) or 530-893-7720 (Chico Center) for more information or to set up an appointment.

Test Proctoring in CAS is available on main campus only (inside CAS). See the current semester's schedule (above left) for test proctoring times. Students must plan to complete their tests within the time limits posted.

Center for Academic Success Mission Statement
The Center for Academic Success (CAS) teaches skills and strategies to help students become independent and active learners and to achieve academic success. In support of this mission, we maintain an open channel of communication with faculty. We supplement faculty instruction by providing peer and professional tutoring, Critical Skills Workshops and associated skills-building courses (EDUC 10, 110, 210), structured content-area support via Instructional Aides and Supplemental Instruction, appropriate resource materials as student needs emerge, and alternate testing facilities.

Our four Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) summarize what students will ideally achieve as a result of their participation in CAS programs and services:

CAS Student Learning Outcomes

1. Effective Use of Resources
2. Successful Application of Learning Strategies
3. Effective Use of Self-Assessment Strategies
4. Retention and Success

The complete list of CAS SLOs, which includes the description of corresponding knowledge and skills, is available in pdf format. On the second page of this document can be found some of the specific behaviors students will demonstrate when the outcomes have been successfully achieved.

We offer many resources in support of academic success for all current Butte College students. Stop by any time to learn more!
