The talk on the court:
October 1, 2009
After five weeks of training things are going well, I think if we can continue to work hard as a group we can make huge gains in the next two weeks. As a team our overall speed is very good, and I’m really enjoying the athleticism. This week I added some extra basketball homework. The assignments varied, but additional shooting, weight training and pool work for everybody.
The lone returner redshirt Sharla Stockton is ready for her first season of competition after playing softball last season. This year’s team will feature three players from Chico High School. Look for Miesha Kimble, Jennifer Kissiar and Brooke Acevedo to make an immediate impact. Angelica Cahee and Jessy Sousa played at different high schools now join forces at Butte to represent Oroville. Rounding out the local talent is Champion Christian’s Camille Fuller and from Corning High School Whitney Bill.
Former San Diego State athlete Jordan Western who played her high school basketball in Boston will join the team and bring some needed inside punch. Oakland Tech’s players Ymonne Davidson-Mays and Makayla West are two recruits that are handpicked for the new look Lady Roadrunners. Two players from Michigan are Katrina Haile who played at Detroit City High School, while LaShielia Jackson will represent Monroe High School.
The 2009-10 lady runners will try to play similar to the 2007-08 conference champions, who scored 85 plus points per game. Look for the team to extend their defense full court, and turn defense into offense. The depth of the team should play a huge factor with 10 or 11 players fighting for minutes. The team has plenty of talent, with depth speed and athleticism. Expect the ladies to compete for their second conference title in three seasons, while making three straight post-season appearances since Brown took over as head coach.
