“Make a Difference Day.”

The college received requests for makeover projects from charitable community organizations, community members, and individuals in need. As a result, hundreds of volunteers were organized into teams to repair handicapped ramps, mend fences, plant trees and gardens, paint school playgrounds, clean graffiti, stain decks, pull weeds, retrofit playground equipment, build stairs, clean gutters, and paint walls.

The project that the Butte College baseball team pitched in on for “Make a Difference Day” was for Eastside Little League. The project was to build carnival booths and paint them for a carnival that is to be held every year for fundraising at Eastside Little League. The proceeds from this annual fundraiser go not only to equipment and field maintenance, but also towards allowing underprivileged kids to participate in the league.

Saturday was a complete success! “Make a Difference Day” is every year on October 24th and Butte College is always looking for volunteers to complete all different types of projects.

Former Butte College pitcher Alberto Rolon’s strong rookie season performance in the independent Frontier League ended gloriously on Wednesday night—with his hands on the championship trophy. Rolon and the Lake Erie Crushers secured the league title with a 13-10 victory over the River City Rascals in the decisive fifth game of the championship series.

Rolon had two wins among his seven relief appearances for Lake Erie in the Frontier League playoffs. His final statistic line included 14 innings pitched, a 1.32 earned-run average, three hits, eight walks and 14 strikeouts.

During the regular season, Rolon compiled seven starts in 15 appearances and ended up with a 4-1 record. His ERA was 3.40 and he held opposing hitters to a .242 batting average. The Crushers, who are in their first season, became the 13th different Frontier League champion since the league’s inception in 1993.

Rolon was an All-Golden Valley Conference selection for Butte in 2005 before transferring to Sonoma State on a baseball scholarship.
