Patricia Wickes
EOPS Counselor

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I started my education by attending Rio Hondo Community College then I transferred to San Diego State University to earn a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences. Finally, I attended the University of New Mexico to earn a Masters Degree in Counseling. I have been a counselor for EOPS since 1994. Before arriving at Butte College I had been a counselor in education for about 15 years. As a first generation Latina student myself, I am familiar with some of the pitfalls, obstacles and challenges that students often encounter. Personally, it is very gratifying working with students who are making their way through the educational system and achieving individual and career goals.

Nancy Retes
EOPS Counselor

Before coming to work in the EOPS office as a full time counselor I worked as a part time counselor at the Butte College Transfer Center and a part time counselor for the Educational Talent Search Program at Chico State.
I like working in the college setting but have had experience teaching at the middle and high school level. My early experiences as a counselor included elementary schools, so I guess I’ve worked with every age group in a school setting. There’s a challenge to every group!
I am an avid traveler and travel to all corners of the globe when I’m not working. I find that traveling around the world helps me know people better. What I find is that language and dress are different in various parts of the world yet as human beings we are all very much the same.
I cannot think of any other profession that is as challenging yet as rewarding as working with the future leaders of society.
Debora McCurry
EOPS Counselor

I am originally from San Jose, Ca. I was a waitress until age 32 when I decided to go to college. I began at a community college and eventually transferred to Chico State where I earned my B.A. in Psychology (‘95) and my M.S. in Marriage Family Therapy (2000). At Chico, I also qualified for EOP as I am a first generation college student.
I began my counseling career as a summer orientation leader and advising intern at Chico and started at Butte College in the General Counseling office in Jan. 2000. I moved over to EOPS in July 2005 and it has been my pleasure to work with my EOPS students since then. I really do have the BEST job in the world and look forward to helping my students achieve academic success in the future.
As far as interests go, I love reading entertainment novels, going to movies, working in the yard and I am a scrap book addict.

Lanette Sharrock
Student Services Tutorial Technician
Hello, my name is Lanette Sharrock. I am the student services tutorial technician at the EOPS/POWER Center. At our facility, one-on-one tutoring is available to EOPS, TRiO, and DSPS students, as well as specialized group tutoring in various classes. These classes include Math 216-124, Math 18, and Chemistry 110. I am always available and prompt to help any student in search of services that we provide. I began working within the POWER Center as a student worker in August 1998. I graduated with four degrees from Butte College and will soon receive my Sociology degree at CSU Chico. With my experience and love for the job, I was hired full-time on November 2007. I see this program as a fundamental help to students and I take pride in the aid it provides. I am blessed because I was raised with a close family and am so lucky to have a second family here at the EOPS/POWER Center.
