This list is a living document being developed by Cheryl Battles, Sustainability Liaison to Basic Skills. All sites have been chosen by Cheryl to be applicable for use in community college classes. Many have free curriculum for instructors to implement immediately. Please contact Cheryl if any of the links do not work properly of you have additional resources that would be appropriate for this list.
This document was compiled by Butte College faculty members Lisa Kekaha (Reading), Julie Withers (Sociology), and Miya Squires (Learning Assistance) in January 2009. The list was distributed at faculty development workshops during spring 2009 to support ongoing development of teaching strategies that best support student success with a focus on basic skills students.
The Poppy Copy, or Basic Skills as a Foundation for Student Success in California Community Colleges
About the Poppy Copy: "This document was compiled by a project team of the Center for Student Success (CSS) of the Research and Planning (RP) Group of the California Community Colleges, under contract from the California Community Colleges (CCC) System Office, with the support of USA Funds. The authors . . . surveyed published literature and other sources to compose this document, which was then reviewed by members of the faculty review panel identified below. In addition, we are grateful for review and assistance provided by Dr. Carole Bogue-Feinour, Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs, CCC System Office, and Dr. John Nixon, Vice-President of Instruction, Mt. San Antonio College."
Created by Marcy Alancraig (Cabrillo College) and Janet Fulks (Bakersfield College), the handbook provides 20 chapters containing specific, practical strategies for all disciplines, basic skills coordinators, and administrators.
