Butte College Foundation
Receives Large Endowment
The family of Louise A. Hagedorn was searching for a way to honor her memory.
In November 2005, the Butte College Foundation announced the most generous contribution the college has ever received. The endowment will benefit Butte College—and its students--for a lifetime.
“We’re delighted and honored to be the stewards of such a remarkable donation,” said John Blacklock, Butte College Foundation President. “We are very thankful to the Hagedorn Family and we know the family’s generosity will help students with much-needed scholarships in the years to come.”
Beginning in Fall 2006, five scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $750 per semester. Four scholarships will be renewable for two years and the remaining scholarship will be awarded annually.
“This contribution means a lot to Butte College and our students and we’re obviously very thrilled,” said Diana Van Der Ploeg, Butte College President. “Given the state’s budget crisis, our college and students benefit greatly from gifts like these.”
According to John Gliha, Executive Director of the Butte College Foundation, the Hagedorn family endowment will assist deserving students who graduated from Paradise High School. The endowment also provides well needed support for educational programs, facility projects or faculty grants.
“It’s a wonderful gift for the College. Our plan is to put the scholarships in the hands of those students who need it most,” said Gliha.
Washington Mutual Donation Helps Students Shine
Butte College Faculty Member Dr. Derrick Booth was awarded $50,000 by Washington Mutual to support the Basic and Advanced Science and Technology Academies of Research (B A STAR).
The B A STAR program was created by Booth who wrote a grant to increase the number of economically and educationally disadvantaged students obtaining technical degrees. The program offers students throughout the state the opportunity to develop technical, teamwork and leadership skills. Over 120 California community college students recently participated in the B A STAR Science and Engineering Research Symposium held recently in Chico.
The funds will be housed by the Butte College Foundation.
The B A STAR program is funded in part by the National Science Foundation.
